Mexican treatment of Pension Income

Post Sat Jul 16, 2011 5:44 am

If I am non-resident in Canada for tax purposes and living in Mexico, would my pension income -- coming from Canada -- be taxable as income in Mexico?
Thanks
Allen

Hi,

Depending if you are you a permanent resident or a visitor?
Different rules apply to permanent residents vs "snow birds".

If one is treated as a non-resident of canada it is because they are Mexican resident. Snowbirds wouldn't be allowed to get the 15% non-resident taxrate.

Thanks folks. I am speaking of being a resident for tax purposes in Mexico, as a snowbird the issue does not arise. As a mexican tax resident, the Canadian government withholds 15% of pension incomes emmanating from Canada. Question is how much more, if any, does Mexico take?

Your entire pension income would be reported to Mex along with all your other income. It would not be a flat rate, and the Cdn tax would be credited, and there are decutions of course.

The marginal rate for someone making C$40K+ would be 23-30%, so expect another 10-15% tax in Mexico.
