Read this: www.cbp.gov/ImageCache/cgov/content/publicat...importingacar.doc (download openoffice or the word file viewer from Microsoft if you haven't got Word).

The bit it's vague on is that there is no duty on vehicles imported as personal effects.

Once you've got the full CBP clearance after the EPA test etc. some States may try and charge you sales tax when you go to swap the title at the DMV, the CBP clearance is supposed to exempt you from it so obviously getting that bit of paper is critical.

Bear in mind a Canadian-spec vehicle is a bit of an oddball in the US so it might not be worth it depending on what it is and what you can sell it for in Canada. Even if you change the fuses for the headlights, get the odometer and speedo changed, etc. (which isn't legally required) the VIN will always be Canadian and a dealer may not like that.

The vehicle does not have to be accompanied, there is a CBP form (Form 3299) for shipping it separately, but obviously it's going to cost you more to do it that way and the freight forwarder will be talking to CBP rather than you, which I don't think is a good idea generally (as they can screw up and get duty charged on it).

As soon as you get to the consulate, hand the security guy your interview letter (they won't let you in without it) and they should let you right in, you won't have to line up outside.

DO NOT TAKE ANY BACKPACKS, BRIEFCASE, TOTEBAGS, PHOTO ALBUMS or stuff like that. Carry everything you need in a plastic shopping bag, or one of those Accordion Filers. No cell phones, no electronics, no food, no drinks. They even confiscated my lip balm the day I went. I got it back though later. If you have a bag with you, they will not let you enter the consulate with it, you'll have to either return to your hotel, or store it at the cafe on the corner, who will charge you I think $5 to store it behind their counter for you. Just a regular every-day plastic shopping bag is all they'll allow in.

Take with you $100 US CASH for your visa, you will have to pay that upstairs when you get in.

Just because you have an appointment time, doesn't necessarily mean they'll see you right then. The also have probably 3 dozen other people there the same day with the same appointment time. If you get there first however and take your number, you'll be seen quicker. If you get there after everyone else, you'll be waiting all day. When I went for my interview I think I was done by like 9:30 am, but then a friend of mine didn't get out of there until 3pm because she arrived *right* at her scheduled time, rather than a bit before.

You will also need to buy a Canada Post quick-mailer or whatever they call them, so they can mail you your passport with visa in it. They don't give them out same day anymore (haven't for a few years now). And apparently its a tough argument to get them to let you come and pick it up the following day.

Yeah, they don't like binders either. Security doesn't, and besides, it won't fit thru the tiny little slat in the window where you have your interview. Loose pages are better, which is why most folks use one of those accordian filer things.
