Hi there! I am an amercian currently living in Minneapolis, MN. I am interested in movng to toronto with a canadian friend of mine. I am a flight attendant for Northwest Airlines and I am based out of Minneapolis. Many flight attendant and pilots live in other cities than the cities they are based in. I was curious what the process would be for me to move to Toronto. I would be going back to Minneapolis every week or two for work. How can I legally go about making this move?
It's going to be tricky if you don't qualify for entry as a skilled worker, have a look at the
CIC website but generally speaking an American would need to have at least a BA degree and substantial work experience in a skilled area. Even if you do the current wait is two years. Flight attendant is not on the NOC list.
You can't get a work permit as your employer and your job are actually in the US.
In addition you would have problems with your taxes, as you would become a resident of Canada for tax purposes and the rates in Ontario are way higher than in Minnesota. As well, the foreign tax credit for non-resident US citizens maxes out at $85,700, so you would face dual-taxation on anything you earned above that amount. There are additional deductions for non-residents but it would depend on your situation as to whether you could claim them.
