Move to Germany or not?

Post Thu May 17, 2007 1:16 pm

Hi everyone,
I am married to a German-born guy who was partially raised in Canada but also lived in Germany from age 19 to 30. We now have been living in Canada for the last 8 years, but my husband wants to go back to Germany. We have been there for a month long visit a couple of years ago and I found groceries and the things we did affordable, but living there can be a different experience from visiting.

Mu husband prefers the German lifestyle and so do I. Neither of us hunts, fishes, or plays/watches hockey which is difficult where we live in Ontario. We both feel that living in Germany will be fulfilling for us and I know it will make my husband much more happy as he is very depressed here and misses his friends and family.

We will have a great support system in Germany and I have many friends there myself. Many of our friends have come to visit and say they love it here but would never live here because it is so boring!

I am concerned with the affordability of living in Germany. We are a one income family, I stay home with our 2 young kids. Activities for our kids are important as well as doing local travelling and a European vacation every few years or so. I guess we just want to be able to live how we do now but with a more fulfilling and satisfying lifestyle.

Can anyone give me some advice or words of wisdom on affordability in Germany.

Thanks

Hi:

My husband and I visited Germany a couple of years ago for a vacation. In general, I think Europe is much more expensive to live, and perhaps even visit (currency exchange) than Canada.

How affordable a place is really depends on your family income, and lifestyle. If you're living in Europe, a european vacation probably will not cost as much if you were flying from Canada. I know airfares are dirt cheap in the EU.

If your husband makes a decent living in Euro's, and you can find an affordable place to live, then ofcourse, I would chose Germany any day! I have been born and raised in Canada by the way.

Remember, it's not what you make, it's how you spend what you make.

Best of luck!
