Move to Montreal?

It's always better to learn the official language of Quebec because everything is in French, of course. You'll not be able to navigate through the city if you can't read the signs and whatnot.

That's not entirely true. Lots of Anglophones can navigate around the city just fine without any knowledge of French. And a lot of people who work in retail and other service-oriented jobs, especially downtown, are functionally bilingual, not to mention areas like Westmount are largely Anglophone.

I think that it's entirely possible to live in Montreal without knowing French, but it will limit you to certain areas and establishments, and it's of course a handicap when you're looking for jobs.

Of course there are people who have lived in Montreal all their lives without knowing French. But I think it's disrespecting the law here. Immigrants have to learn the official language of the province and I think it is immigrants' duty to fulfill the requirement.

There is no "law" that states that residents of Quebec must speak French, just as there is no "law" that states that people who move to other Canadian provinces must speak English. By the way, I would not consider someone moving from Toronto (or any other Canadian city) to Quebec to be an "immigrant."

No wonder Francophones and Anglophones are always fighting over the language conflict.

Of course one can speak any language they like but I only suggesting it's better to learn French as well. If people want to be stubborn and only speak in English then that's their own business.

Actually, from my perspective, it's not about the tired anglophone-francophone debate. Canada is a country of immigrants and people come to Canada from many parts of the world. They often speak a language that is not French or English. Of course, to become a citizen of Canada they must learn the language, but there is no law, as you stated before, which dictates that a person must learn a particular language to live somewhere.

Immigrants from other places have to learn French, which I always think is crazy because if you are fluent in French or English those count as points towards immigration into Canada - except Québec which has it's own immigration dept. So if you only speak English you can immigrate into Toronto and then move to Québec! It really is dumb.
