Hi Everyone!
My name is Megan and I live near Ottawa. I just found this site while looking for information on living abroad.
I'm currently entering into grade 11 and after I graduate in June 2006, I was seriously thinking about moving to the UK and working there for a year with a friend. I was wondering if this is reasonable. Am I too young to do this? I'll be 18 when I graduate. If this is a reasonable plan what should I do first? Are there any organizations that I should look to? What can any of you suggest to me?

Thanks a bundle.
Megan

Hello Megan,

When I first read your posting, I thought “Wow. She is thinking ahead.” There is no reason why you wouldn’t be able to do what you’re thinking about. The UK government grants working holiday visas to people from the age of 18 to 28 and you can research what’s involved in getting one on the website below.

I think there is a requirement that you have some money to bring over with you, so that would be the first challenge to meet. Between now and coming to the UK, you should try to get work experience that would make you employable once you’re here – restaurant/ bar work could be an option to explore.

Have you thought about where in the UK you would like to be?

I don't really know yet. This is just a dream that I've had and I wanted to know if it could be a reality. I'd prefer Scotland or England, but I've not figured out anywhere specific. I'm working at a Wendy's right now, so I have some experience working. Plus, that will get me the money I need to get over there! Are you in the UK or in Canada?
Do you know of any other good sites that could help me find out more? Thanks for the reply.

Megan

Hi there,

I'm a French Canadian currently living in BC. Going to England had been a dream of mine for several years, so I decided to go when I graduated university. I registered with the SWAP program (Students Working Abroad Program) through the Travel Cuts Agency. For a fee, they will take care of the necessary paperwork to get you a 12 week Working Visa, put you up in a B&B for 3 days (ours was a dump!), and brief you at their office when you get to the UK. That briefing will allow you to meet other travelling students who might become your flat mates (that's what I did!) and they also post job ads.

The best thing to do is to register in a temp agency. I got work right away in an office (I had a business degree in my pocket, with some summer job experience). Most people I met got a job with a catering temp agency. I liked the 12 week idea: if you love it, then you can plan on moving permanently; if you hate it, then you just fly back home, and you made money in the meantime! I saved my money like crazy and backpacked through Europe for 6 weeks after my 12 week stint. I think I would have moved to England had it not been for my boyfriend (now my husband) who was still in Quebec.

I cannot wait until I go back. I loved the Brits: takes them a little while to warm up, but once they become your friends, they remain loyal no matter what.

Good luck!

Sh.
