moving BACK to Canada. Can I deduct moving expenses?

Postby chinapat on Wed Apr 09, 2008 5:15 pm

Hi. I have just moved back to Canada, after 7 years abroad. I was based in Singapore working for a Canadian company. I was required to move back, but the company did not pay for the associated expenses of the move.

Does anyone know if I can deduct these on my income tax return? I had assumed I could, but my accountant is telling me because I was a "non resident" I am not allowed.

Anyone?

Yeah, he's right, if you weren't paying Canadian taxes at the time you can't claim the exemption. If your were paying taxes in Singapore, you might be able to claim something similar there.
