Moving back to Canada - Canada Customs?

Post Thu Apr 29, 2004 7:44 am

I've been in Houston for 4.5 years and it appears that I will soon be moving back to Canada. My biggest concern is about dealing with Canada Customs upon my arrival at the border as I have heard many horror stories about how difficult they can be.

I am wondering if anyone has any experience with repatriating to Canada?

Also, the information available from Canada Customs regarding taxes that would be applied to personal belongings (furniture, auto, etc) seems somewhat ambiguous. Has anyone out there had experience with importing their auto to Canada when they've repatriated?

Any help is appreciated.

Hi Bill~

I moved back to Canada from Grand Rapids, Michigan 5 years ago (after living there for almost 10 years). I wrote down all the serial numbers for my electronics and listed (very roughly) all that I was bringing back with me. (I was driving a big ole UHell at the time). If I recall correctly, all they did was ask me a few questions, I went inside to sign a form or two, and that was it. They didn't even look in the truck. I did not have to pay any taxes on any of my belongings. I bought my car in Canada and was told when I first brought it INTO the states I would have to pay tax on that, but when I told the guy I had a new car I was bringing in, he just looked and me oddly and just, um...nice? (So I don't know if you will have any trouble with bringing your car here- as long as it passes the emission standards here).

I have many border horror stories, but moving back to Canada was not one of them. Good luck!

Moving Back

This is to BIllHouston...We have lived in Denver for three years and have been enquiring about bringing a vehicle made in the US into Canada. There is alot to it and to begin with you must find out iif it is one of the ones allowed across the border. I would call 1-416-626-1803 in Toronto and they will send you info. There is a web site www.riv.ca We have found out that there is a duty of 182.00 plus 100.00 for air tx plus you are charged 7% on any amount over 10,000.00. You must have original sales receipt, all recalls done, you have 45 days to get all canadian modifications done before it can be liscenced and must notify the border when you plan to cross. Depending on where you are going there could be other stuff you must take care of. Importing your household and personal effects are another story.. as long as you have owned them for 6months if under 5 years 5year. I suggest you go to google and type in moving back to Canada and you will find a document that will help you. Good Luck
