Well then I guess I'll sell the furniture and just pack the Ford! What a bummer.

Hope your Explorer is paid for and you have title in hand. Most US lenders will not grant permission to have your vehicle exported to canada.

Oh yes. It's all mine and paid for. Big reason why I don't want to leave it behind and have to purchase a new one. Do you know much about bringing a vehicle over to Canada? It's a 2003.

Go and have a look at www.riv.ca

If the vehicle forms part of your personal effects, declare it on CBSA Form B4 and there is no duty.

Does anyone have any information about paying back an american student loan while living in Canada? What a pain to figure out. I know what I need to do (keep american bank account, pay online as I have been) but to earn Cdn. dollars and pay back the loan in USD is going to be a bad financial choice. The current lender is useless on providing help or information, of course. Does anyone have any suggestions or info?
Many thanks.

Any sort of payment over an extended period of time in foreign currency is going to cost you a fair bit I'm afraid, because of all the wire charges and the fluctuations in the exchange rate. But don't use a bank to do the exchanges because their rates are crap, set up an account on www.xe.com or something like that.

As a returning Canadian, you have a personal exemption of $10K including car! If you have alcohol, you can obtain a special permit from LCBO or whatever province and the cost is much, much cheaper to bring it back, ie., $1-$3/bottle. Mattresses much be fumigated. Check ABFreight Systems-uship, you will find that they are reliable and go right into Canada with goods, better than uhaul. Uhaul tacks on a lot of charges and they are no cheaper than having the stuff sent, along with no headache of driving. Vehicle papers must arrive at border before you do!

There is no $10,000 limit: http://www.cbsa-asfc.gc.ca/publications ... -1-eng.pdf

Lots of people who come on here mention this limit, I had more than $10,000 of stuff on my B4 and no-one at CBSA ever mentioned it. If it ever did exist, it hasn't existed for awhile. Even if it did, NAFTA exempts anything made in the NAFTA area.
