Moving Back to Canada from the US.

Post Wed Feb 11, 2009 11:56 am

I am wondering if anyone has already moved back to Canada, and could give us some tips to make the move easier. Maybe something that we haven't thought of. I have already listened to a pre-recorded message from the Canadian Border Services, and have spoken to a representative, and am still a little worried getting everything done.

Did you hire a UHaul or did you go with a moving company? When you arrive at the border, do you hand all paperwork over, and pay all duties at that time? What can we expect we we get to the border?

You shouldn't have to pay any taxes or duties on your personal and household goods at all. Tax

Various thread on here about this subject, the main point is to get CBSA forms B4 and B4A and fill them in. You present them at the POE, they check whatever you have with you and check them off on the form. Anything arriving later you present the B4 again and they check that off the form until everything has arrived. If you use a removal company you still get the B4 signed off when you enter, then when your goods arrive you have to go to the local CBSA office and present it to get the goods released.

For vehicles, check www.riv.ca - there is NO DUTY, zero, zip nata on personal effects, with some exceptions for tobacco, alcohol and goods you have owned for less than six months.

I too am in a similar situation and am trying to find a one-way small moving truck rental as I want to do the drive across Canada. It's near impossible to find a company that will allow this. I don't have a lot of things to move, but do have 2 pets and would rather travel with them and make it a fun event anyway. Does anybody have any leads?

U-Haul is the only one that does cross border one way rentals.

There are horror stories out there on U-Haul. I used them to move from Canada to the USA with no problems. ENSURE you inspect the truck!! Some of their fleet is in rough shape! And you have to let them know your moving out of country, as not all their fleet can go across the border (at least that was what i was told by their rep)

Well I looked into Uhaul because I figured renting a small cargo trailer would make more sense since I am bringing my vehicle with me, and go figure that they won't rent to anyone who plans on using their Ford Explorer to tow it. What a crock! I should just use a friend's "approved truck" when I pick it up and make the switch. Does anyone have any other ideas?

Rent one of their full sized trucks and tow the Explorer on a tow bar.

Explorers are not built for towing trailers. They're kinda crap actually. I know. I've got one. :p
