I'm in the process of considering moving back to Canada after living in the UK since Oct. 2001. I have aquired indefinite leave to remain in the UK.

My question is what do I apply for to get back into Canada and what do I have to go through? Any help is SO very appreciated.

I am thinking about the move back myself. So far this is all I have come across relating that:

The only thing I think you need to do is sort out bringing your stuff into the country.

Thanks for that link, it was the most helpful thing i've come across so far. I won't be taking much with me, probably just a few suitcases, but its so nice to know that I can take some of my larger items.

Still looking for information regarding any paperwork i might have to fill in and how long i can stay for (i aim to stay permanently). I mean, can I just walk back in the country and stay?

I'm desperate to get some answers.

We moved back to BC after nearly 5 years in the USA. It was easy. They treat you differently if you are away from Canada for less than 2 years, less than 5 or more than 5. Mostly, it concerns your stuff and how long you have owned it. As well, it mostly pertains to larger items like cars. For me, I had to be able to prove that I owned things for at least 6 months and I couldn't sell any of my US things in Canada for at least 6 months. I think my cars were restricted from sale for a year. We had a UHaul van full of stuff and an itemized list of contents showing the value of each item. They looked at the van, never opened it and took a copy of the list. There is a returning citizen form that they will have you fill out and sign. Vehicle importation is different, but likely doesn't apply to you. For others, if you import a vehicle to Canada, the age of the vehicle is important. Less than 15 years old, it incurs an RIV fee of $382, I think. Over 25 years, no import duty is charged. GST is charged when you are at the border. BC PST was charged when I finally got the cars licensed.

Basically you can just walk back into the country, say I'm home, and become a Canadian resident again. You are a Canadian, will always be a Canadian, and can always live in Canada. BUT....Make sure that you get private health insurance before you go as your Canadian insurance will no longer cover you. In Ontario for example you have to have private insurance for 6 months before your OHIP will become re-activated.
