moving back to Canada

Post Tue Dec 09, 2003 3:21 pm

Hi......our time in Australia has finished and we are about to return to Canada in the new Year. We are getting some confliciting opinions about what we can take back to Ontario, as to duties, what is duty free, best way to get re-established in Ontario, when does our Ontario Health care kick in again, overseas taxes payable and other such things....anybody got any advice........MB

Hi there,

Not sure about how things work when coming back from Australia, but I wasn't hassled too much when I came back from Europe, and didn't have any difficulties bringing things back...Though I wasn't bringing back a whole lot.

I think if you're out of Canada for more than a month then you can bring back a pretty large sum of good duty free. Try contacting the Embassy in Australia or maybe checking the information on the canada.gc.ca website.

If you find out any solid information, let us know..Perhaps that would make a good section for the website!

Good luck,
Matt

I'm wondering as well about the OHIP thing - my Mom told me during my last visit home that there's a three month waiting period at the moment for new OHIP registration! Not sure how it works for returning residents? If you hear anything, let me know and I'll do the same! :)

Cheers.
