I have been living and working in Alaska for the past year and now am coming bak to Edmonton Alberta. I have been using a company leased vehicle for my time in Anchorage and now that I am moving back, I have been looking at a similar local vehicle only to find that it will cost about $7000 more there.
Where can I go to see what costs I will have if I buy my leased vehicle back in Alaska and then drive it back to Canada? Is there a certain amount of time I have to be out of country before I get any GST exemptions?

Thanks

You need to buy it, leased vehicles are a nightmare because of the title transfer.

All the nitty gritty is at www.riv.ca and also check with the CBSA website. You need Form B4 and B4A. As I recall, it has to be your personal possession for a year to be GST exempt, there may be duty as well if the car was made outside of the NAFTA area.

There are also US Customs regulations to comply with, it's on the RIV website.

Agree with Steven. You need to buy the car before you can get your Alberta license plate and insurance. If you have not lived outside of Canada for at least 5 years, you need to owned and used the car (or any personal item) for at least 6 months to be eligible for duty-free exemption. If your car worths more than $10,000, you need to pay applicable taxes.Highly recommend the CBSA website.
