Moving back to Cda - Tax implications

Postby Sydney_Beige1 » Fri Jan 22, 2010 4:15 pm

Hey,
I am working in the US, on a L1A Visa, I have been deemed a non-resident in Canada. The project I am on is coming to a close and I will probably move back to Canada. I'm not in love with the US. Anyway I may end up working for this company until Sept 2010.

What are the tax implications that I'm facing for the year 2010 once I'm back in Canada? Would it be better if I not work in Canada until 2011? I'm really not sure about the whole worldwide income thing once I get back to Canada. Thanks. Syd

You major concern when moving back to Canada is to make sure that any US income that is coming to you gets paid to you before you return.

Just to be clear, you are a non-resident of canada. period. You were 'determined' to be a non-resident, not 'deemed' to be as this is a special class.

Another thing to consider are any US pensions you accrued or contributed to. You may want to collapse these before returning, or roll as much of these as possible into a Roth plan. I deal more with this at forums.serbinski.com

But in terms of working in canada when you return, ther is no particular advantage to waiting 'til 2011. Your Cdn wages will be excluded from your final US tax return, which will be a full-year 1040.
