moving back

Post Sat Mar 07, 2009 7:19 pm

Hi All:

I have been in Oz for 1.5 years now and am planning to move back home to Canada in the next couple of months.

I would like some advice if I should ship my furniture back? If I want to sell my stuff here, what is the best way of advertising my furniture?

I am on a 457 visa. Aside from closing down accounts, can someone please guide me on what else (who else) I need to notify?

Many thanks!
Ros

Unless you have very expensive furniture I'd sell it, cost of transport is expensive. I had lots of luck using http://www.gumtree.com.au/, AUS version of Craigslist.

You could try advertising in your local paper. You could list things for sale by item or have a garage sale.

Or, if you want to do online there's always Ebay. Plus, there's another website that's just like the classifieds (not auction):
http://www.tradingpost.com.au/Home

For giving things away there's charity bins, freecycle (online site) and always the garbage dump if necessary.

As far as what to do when you leave, since you're on a temp visa you should be able to take your super contributions with you when you go. So I'd look into that. I would check with the tax office to see if there's anything you need to do there.

Aside from that I would check with whatever province you're moving back to in Canada to check on health care. I've heard sometimes they don't like to cover you until you are there for several months. Although I think by law that could be challenged. Either way, something to look into. I can't really think of anything else that you need to do. Except for maybe look into ways of transferring your money back to Canada.

If you're moving back to BC it's a 3 month waiting list for medical coverage unless you didn't declare you were out of the country.

I believe it's the same in Ontario, 3 months wait. The rest of the country I'm not sure about but I would expect the same amount of time.

Hi Ros, if you're coming back to Vancouver and feel like meeting up, I'd like to hear about your Adelaide experience and any luck you had with shipping companies. Most people I've known have had nightmares shipping stuff back.
