Moving from Vancouver to Australia, any tips appreciated!

Post Thu May 20, 2010 1:28 pm

Hello! Just signed up for this forum, so far everyone seems pretty chill and helpful! Anyways, I am currently living in Vancouver but am thinking about moving to somewhere in Australia in the Fall. I recently graduated from a Marketing Program and have experience in Promotions, Retail, and Administration. I want to spend between 6 months and a year living and working in Australia, so I plan to get a travel work visa or whatever they are called :? . I am not sure exactly where I want to go yet, but I was looking at the Gold Coast. I could also move around down there too depending on work and money.

So, what I'm asking for really is any tips you may have. Jobs that are easy to get in that area, good/bad cities, average living cost, average income, any helpful websites, living in hostels vs. actually renting a room for a few months (I am thinking I will want to get an actual place for a majority of the time and maybe do small trips to nearby cities), places to go and things to see, how much money to take... I am 21 years old and will be going alone, so I would want a job that is fairly social, as I won't know anyone there and want to make some friends :P Ok this is getting long, so any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Wow cool :) Im also in Van and also moving to Aussie land :)
Im going on a one year working holiday which is the one you are going on probably; although, I plan to stay permanently.
Queensland is beautiful, and I think its a great choice (where the gold coast is). Ill be going there as well, but to brisbane.
I've had many friends who have gone on the one year working holiday visas. Yes, Hostels are the better way to go, and thats because you will make friends instantly, and there are job postings at lots of them for people on that visa. Plan to travel around though, dont stay in one state. I recommend St. Kilda, Victoria, part of melbourne- tons of hostles there, and the weather is alot like BC, although its hot for longer than here, its really not that hot.. where as the gold coast is very hot, and chances are you will be working outside in Queensland.
Im not allowed to post full links cause im new on this forum, but checkout jobfortraveller.com.au, think i can get away with that cause its not a full link lol.

Hey! I'm moving to Melbourne in September. Doing the one year working holiday visa thing and then hoping to stay... so far I've just been searching tons of websites for jobs and such *going to be living with friends so that will help in that area... seek.com.au seems to be a really good job site to check out :)

Hey there,

I'm moving from Toronto to Sydney next week on a one year 457 through my work. Does anyone know if there is an expat bar or Canadian group that gets together for hockey games?

I've been to Australia before and I would recommend starting in Sydney or Melbourne for work.

If anyone is ever in Sydney let me know and perhaps we can grab a drink.

Cheers,

Bobbo

G'day If you make it to Adelaide you'll find a mad Canucks fan excited as heck that Vancouver is in the Stanley Cup final! I've been a tour guide over most parts of Australia so I'll be happy to share any advice you may need. GO Canucks!! :D
