Moving household contents home...

Postby SarniaGrl » Tue Jul 28, 2009 6:46 pm

Hi everyone!

I have a bit of a twist on a commonly-asked question. I am finally able to retrieve my things from storage in Tenn., and have already had the 'goods to follow' form stamped on my return to Canada. Due to work constraints, I cannot get the time away to move my daughter back to school, so the plan is to have her dad drive her down with all her gear (she's an F-1), move her in, then pick up the items in storage, bringing the load home using a small U-Haul trailer.

My questions are;

1/ Will this be an issue with CBSA, given he's driving my larger vehicle and trailer back providing he has all the appropriate documentation?

2/ Furthermore, will him driving the vehicle down (it's in my name, we live in seperate cities) be an issue with CBP? My daughter will have to stop in at the POE anyways to obtain her visa for the school year. We need to use it to haul all her dorm things down. Will it suffice for him to have a notarized letter authorizing use of the vehicle (he'll also have my 'goods to follow' paperwork) to move her back to school or is it even needed?

3/ I've read where mattresses need to be fumigated, but does that also apply to solid foam mattresses?

Shouldn't be a problem. I can't recall anyone ever being asked to show proof of ownership or permission to drive a car across the border, not just for an in-and-out trip.

You're the second person this month to mention mattress fumigation, but I don't think it ever gets resolved. WHERE or WHO told you that mattressess need to be fumigated? Not a single cross border moving company knows anything about it, which is quite odd.

Hi Reba,
I had read that on the bb about mattresses but hadn't been able to find out any other info. Logic would have it if you had to fumigate mattresses, then it would also apply to furniture such as couches given their construction, right? You're right, if moving companies haven't heard of it, it must be one of those urban legends of sorts. I hadn't thought of checking that tidbit out with a moving company. I swear, I'm having a case of the Mondays, lol.

Just give him something in writing saying he's using your vehicle and importing your goods on your behalf. Or meet him at the POE even with the B4A. Make sure the letter has your contact details on it.
Steve.

Hi all,
One last thing. Turns out there'll be a few extra boxes of dishes and household items (comforter & bedding) coming back north as they won't be needed in the dorm after all. Do I need to print off a new 'goods to follow' and add an addendum to the previously stamped list or just let it be with the current form?
