Moving this summer. Dual citizen. Job placement?

Post Sun May 16, 2010 6:46 pm

Hello all. I'm a 27-year old male looking at moving to either Cardiff, Brighton or London sometime this summer (early as mid-June, late as August) from Victoria, BC. I have dual citizenship and a UK passport. There are a lot of sites and programs to help people looking to receive a job placement with a short-term work visa, however I haven't had much luck searching for programs for those of us with dual.

Does anyone know of any job placement/internship programs for people with dual citizenship? Is my best bet to just keep checking Craigslist, DirectGov, Work Gateways ad nauseum until something comes up? Any job sites that specifically cater to Canadians? Is there an equivalent to YMS for people who don't require a work visa?

Thanks in advance for answering any of my questions or providing me with any new data that I may not have thought of.

EDIT: I suppose that I should have mentioned what type of work I'm looking for. I've got a B.Sc. in Psychology, and the majority of my experience is in office/hotel work.

Another question: when I'm job searching, and under Wage I see "Meets National Minimum Wage": does that mean that the job pays exactly £5.80, or is that just the standard nomenclature if the employer does not want to disclose the wage?

Hi - I'm 27 and a dual citizen. I moved to the UK 6 months ago from Canada. I worked in the charitable sector and was lucky to secure a job before moving, through online applications and a phone interview. I think that's unusual; most of the people I meet seem to be in less formal employment, or need to spend some time at the beginning sorting out their immigration status.

Based on my experience, my advice to you would be to stop considering yourself a "dual citizen" when you arrive in the UK. What your British employers need to know is that you're a UK citizen with the right to live/work here. That's becoming even more important with the new government, which sounds like it's going to become more restrictive to non-EU migrants. So start looking at sites that are UK-focused!

Jobcentre plus is a good place to start looking at government-based job listings (Google Job Centre Plus)
You'll need to register for a National Insurance number (like a Social Insurance Number - easy once you have an address and your passport) within a year of arrival, and you do it through them.

Otherwise, maybe online jobsites like Guardian Jobs? I'd also recommend that if it's at all possible to find a job before you move, that you try to do it. Having a job secured made things like setting up a bank account and finding a flat a lot easier for me.

Best of luck with the job search and the move!

As was mentionned, your Cdn citizenship means nothing in UK: you are a full-fledged Brit.
This site is a travel site and not best source for these topics:

like the others said, drop the "dual-citizen" title, that is only useful to customs and immigration authorities, if you are in the UK, you're a British Citizen, if you are in Canada, you're a Canadian, I'm assuming you hold both passports as well ?

hello, i hold dual citizenship with canada/italy - would the same rules apply?

i was also wondering about the same thing regarding finding employment prior to arriving permanently. it seems the best way to go, especially for securing a flat, bank account, etc.
