Moving to Australia with Work/Holiday Visa

Post Sat Feb 14, 2009 5:18 pm

Hi, I'm new to the forum so I hope I dont sound too out of place.

I'm graduating in April 2009, with a BA in honours Economics. I have some job around 8 months of sales and customer service experience with Nestle Canada.

I am planning to move to Australia for at least a year in September. I was wondering what my chances would be for obtaining a job in the business/economics field of work, with me holding a work/holiday visa.

Thanks in advance!

Even though I do not have much experience in job placement for your field of work, I will try helping you based on my personnal experience.
It is pretty difficult to find a 'serious' job on a working holiday visa, mostly because of the time constraint. With this visa, you can only work up to 6 months for the same company, which is usually a turnoff for many employers looking to fill permanent positions or longer contracts. The working holiday visa is basically designed to allow you to work in order to finance your travelling and not to just let you work for a year. However, during my job search in Australia, I did see many temporary posititons available in marketing and administration, so it would be possible to find short term work in your field. I think you just have to be clear about your motivations and ambitions for your trip to Australia: are you going to explore the country and travel around, or do you just want to get some job experience overseas ? If the latter is your anwser, then maybe you can look at finding internship opportunities that you can set up before leaving.

Like the other poster said, it would be difficult to get a "serious" position, but I think you'd find it fairly easy to get a temp position... you may feel like, with your education, that work would be a little beneath you (and it would be) but it would allow you to get some experience with the kind of companies you would like to work for, while traveling around the country.

Otherwise, you can always try to secure a job before you head over there, with a company willing to sponsor you to work for them.
