Post Thu Aug 21, 2008 8:36 pm

Thinking of moving to barbados from Toronto - would like to hear from people that have done the move and their experiences

Im starting a job hunt and wondering if there are places that are easier to get in then others - i do have dual citizenship.

I just moved to BGI at the beginning of July, from Toronto. So far so good. weather is very hot ;)

If you have Bajan citizenship, coming to Barbados will be much easier than it is for a foreigner. Most of us have to jump through hoops to work here. There is a lot of good information specific to this on britishexpats (dot com - i'm not allowed to post a web address yet) in the Barbados section. Lots of us on that forum who are not British, btw.

If you have lived in Barbados before then you will know what to expect. Many people think visiting a place is a good indication of what it's like to live there, but of course this is not always the case.

Living here is enjoyable for the most part for us. There are always tradeoffs, and it is nearly impossible to refrain from making comparisons to one's home country, especially if the item in comparison "works better" in the home country. That's all part of culture shock. After a while, we may not notice these things anymore.

p.s. good luck!

Hi my name is Jeff hope you are doing well.
I became a citizen of Barbados last year by decent. My father was born in St Johns parish. He passed away in 2008 but the one thing I was going to do is move to barbados and contnue our name there.
The time is close in moving to barbados and I just wanted to get some imput on my skills that I could offer to the Island.
I presently own a buisness building decks and doing renovations. I do realize that the construction buisness is booming there but how many people are looking for good workers. Being a Bajan, will that make it easier for me to find work? I was there last year and met alot of people from England. Super nice and willing to chat while on buisness or on vacation.
What are the chances of getting hooked up with the government in building decks on housing projects? I know Bajans have patios made of cement but is there an interest in wood decks?
How much is a container to move from Toronto to Barbados approximately?
Is there anyone out there that wants to start up a buisness with a citizen of Barbados making things easy in regards to government issues?
I am going to move there and look for employment, that goes without saying. I have been looking forward to this part of my life and I know that this was in my cards to attempt.

Your input would be appreciated thanks
