Yes, move to Edinburgh instead. OK, that's a bit harsh. Glasgow is definitely good for night life and entertainment but it has areas that are really dodgy. Pick your location wisely...

I lived in Glasgow for 6 moths and spent all my spare time in Edinburgh! Had my life threatened, and watched a man get kicked to death across the street from my work while in Glasgow! Go somewhere else in Scotland!

My advice, if you're still wanting to locate to Glasgow would be to seek advice from the locals. Find out where the nice area is, locate a pub there and ask the people working there where they would live in the city. This worked for me when I moved to city and had no idea on its various areas.

On the other hand, you do not have to live in Glasgow if you are working there. The train system is good for commuting so you're not limited to living in Glasgow.

I don't me be a scare monger, but Glasgow would not be my first choice, you may want to reconsider making it yours.

Well I am joining a friend of mine in Glasgow. I heard it can be rough but I am sure I can tough it out. My friend and I were moving somewhere else but she is going to go to school there. SO HERE WE GO! Smile

Myra,
Have a great time, Glasgow can be a great place to be, even though it can also be a pretty scary place to be. Just make sure that you always have taxi fare top get home - just in case! I lived in what was supposed to be a good neighbourhood, but I didn't feel safe the entire time I lived there. I have been in the UK for 4 years, and my job takes me all over the UK - Glasgow is the first place that I have lived that I didn't feel safe!

If you get a craving for Root beer there is an A&W just off of Sauchiehall St, in the pedestrianised area - I went there often just to get a root beer on my way home! If hockey is what you crave - there is a Scottish league team in Edinburgh - the Capitals. Games are only £10.00 (or at least that is what they were last year) and the bus that goes from the Buchanan St bus station stops just out the rink.

If you get the train into Edinburgh - get the one from the Queen St. station as it is the faster of the tow trains available to get to Edinburgh. The train that leaves from the central station takes a lot longer than the one from Queen street as it takes the "tourist" route.

Have fun, stay safe, and if you get the chance, try to get to the highlands - they are fantastic! (there is a company called Hart of Scotland - based out of Edinburgh, that does some fantastic trips that are reasonably priced!)

Best of luck
Beverley

Hi Myra,

www.s1jobs.com is a good website to start out with to find jobs in Scotland. I've been living in Glasgow for a couple of years now. Grew up in TO. I miss Canada, but I'm having a great time here. Being so close to Europe has it's advantages for traveling.

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Myra,
Hmmmm, interesting responses so far. Harsh words about Glasgow from some posters! I have been in Scotland for three years and I was in Glasgow for the first year that I was here. I am in Stirling now because we wanted to buy a home and couldn't afford anything in Glasgow with a garden and parking! I still go in on the train (30 minutes) every couple of weeks to shop or whatever.
I found it to be a lively, beautiful, friendly and happening city. I am sure there are "bad" areas but frankly all big cities have them, yes even Edinburgh. I never felt unsafe even walking alone at night.
I was living in the west end which is a fabulous area with all kinds of people. There are great restaurants, shops, delis and the like along Great Western and Byres rd. The Botanical Gardens in there for sunny days, few and far between as those sometimes are! And great walks in Kelvin Park.
The west end is also home to a large number of students from Glasgow Uni, is that where your friend is going?
The south side is really nice too. Where will you be living?
Taxis are cheap and easy to flag down, the underground is clean and quick and it's an easy city to walk in.
There are even great train links to the rest of the UK.
For jobs you could check out any of the following sites:

Good luck on your move!
