Hi there,

I'm hoping I'll be able to find some help here! I'm moving to London (or near London) this fall. I'm a dual citizen, so I'm hoping it won't be too difficult. Anyway, I'm just wondering if anyone can give me so advice on things like: finding an apartment (what areas are good but not too expensive? something furnished and short term -- about 6 months), finding a job (where is a good place to look online for jobs? Right now I do data entry/office work, so something similiar would be ideal), and just another general information that anyone might be able to offer (about housing/rent/working, etc).

Thank you so much for any help you can give me! I've been to England and London a lot, I've just never lived there so I'm feeling a little overwhelmed. Excited, but overwhelmed!

Thank you - and I'm completely open to questions as well, if I need to give some more specifics, etc.

Thanks!

I recommend moveflat.co.uk if you're looking to share. Gumtree.co.uk also has a lot of listings, but the interface isn't so nice.

Area-wise, there are all sorts. Generally the E-postcodes aren't so hot, but there are still nice bits there.

Hey-
Not sure if this is helpful or not, but I live in SE London and will have some space in my flat for new flatmates at the end of August. Not sure what you are looking for, and since we don't know each other from Adam (or Eve or Scooby Doo for that matter), it is a bit odd. But let me know if you want more info!

Oh, the previous posts suggestion to check out Gumtree is a good one, I think!

Thanks for your replies! But I'm actually not looking to share. It's me and my sister coming - we're ideally looking for a one/two bedroom that's furnished in a decent area that's not crazy-expensive. Smile

I'm just feeling overwhelmed about where to start. Especially because I won't be able to look at a place in person, so I want to make sure that the agent I'm using or the places I'm looking are reliable. I have spent a lot of time in London, but only as a visitor and not a resident.

I'm sorry if it's too many questions, but would you be able to suggest any particular areas that I'd be able to start looking at - just to get some ideas?

Thank you so much!

I am not sure about suggesting areas - the place is just so big! I always feel like I could jus move to another borough and feel like I've moved cities! What are you looking for? Looking to be near? Will you be relying on the publich transport system?

There is such a difference - especially in people's minds - of North, South, East and West. Living below the Thames (in South London) is often considered "not really London" or "far away" - and it just isn't. I lived in North London first, and absolutely loved it - especially Finsbury Park, but that is also because I had friends up there. But the opportunity to have a nice place and pay less came up and I am now a SE London gal - and it is great too!

Anyway, I am rattling on. If you mention what you're looking for I can do my best to make some suggestions.

Cheers,
Angela

Thank you so much already for your help.

So, I've been looking around a bit more and I have a few more specific areas in mind now: North London (like you suggested), Stratford-ish area and Greenwich area. Would anyone be able to tell me anything about these areas? Are they nice? Safe? I'm mostly concerned with somewhere that is safe, relatively inexpensive (somewhere in the 200-300 per week range), and just a nice area to be in (the feel of it). Also, close to the tube is fantastic (that doesn't take too long to get to central London). Are there any areas that I should be looking at that fit that criteria?

Thank you!
