Moving to London - Livable Wage For 5 months

Post Tue Mar 24, 2009 10:13 am

Hi guys,

I am almost done my first year of university. Having not taken a year off between high school and university, I am completely sick of school. Instead, I am going to be taking this coming year off. From Sept 2 - Oct 21 I will be traveling throughout Europe with one of my friends. The plan is to apply for the youth mobility scheme and then after my Europe trip to move directly to London. After working there until May or June I plan on moving back to Canada.

Currently I have 2 years of retail experience, (one year working for the Source by Circuit City, and currently working at Future Shop in commission sales selling computers). I will have also completed one year of business at the University of Windsor. After looking through some jobs online, it seems my best would be to get a telesales job. Many of them seem to pay around 16-18k per year.

I plan on renting a room in central London, and realize rent would be around 400 pounds per month. Is this a sustainable income for 5 months? I would not be purchasing very many goods (clothing, electronics etc), but would like to go out the odd night clubbing or to the pub.

Being a personable person with sales experience, I am not too worried about performing during job interviews, but would I be able to score interviews in the first place with the way the economy is? There seems to be a decent amount of postings on gumtree.

Thanks for your input, Braden

16-18k is grim for central london but it depends what you consider "nice". We spend £ like you spend $.

£400 is very cheap for London, does this include heat, water, elec, gas, council tax (kinda like property tax)? I would suspect not.

Remember we are in a recession here, much worse than Canada, lots of the low end jobs like call centres have seen massive layoffs. Do check that you have some sort of realistic chance of getting workbefore making any financial committments.

Hey, thanks for the reply.

In terms of rent cost, as I stated I will be renting a room, not a whole apartment. £400 should cover a room including utilities after checking on gumtree most are in that range.

Also if I move, and do not find work within a month, its a simple plane ride back home :). LOL

I would suggest you to start online tutoring as it will facilitate you to tour various locations without any limitations and to earn as per your will. You can earn as much as you want with the flexibility of working hours without worrying about the targets like in sales jobs.
