Hello all,
I am new to this cannuck abroad stuff...so be patient with me, as i am still figuring it out.
I am looking for some advice about visiting/living in mexico. I just graduated from high school this past june, and I am wanting to come to mexico to do some traveling and continue to learn spanish before going to university next sept. My boyfriend(mexican national) lives in mexico city. My best friend (also mexican but currentlly living in canada) is moving back to mexico in a few months to work there. Not currently being in school i have the oportunity to go and stay with either my friend or boyfriend. I was thinking of staying for six months and possibly trying to continue studying spanish.
Any ideas about where would be a good place to study spanish in either mexico city or puebla? I have been studying spanish in school and am probably at about an intermediate level. It's proving difficult to find places from up in canada via the internet, as most places are student exchanges or places where they set you up with accomodations and stuff. I am simply looking for somewhere to continue studying while in mexico.
Also, I know you require a working permit in order to work in mexico. Does anyone know how easy/difficult it would be to get a working permit if its just lower level part time or full time jobs that i would be looking for? I do have some places where it might be possible for me to work...but i just don't know if its possible to get a working permit. And is it rediculous to be looking for a job in mexico if you are not fluent in spanish?
Lastly, is it safe for me to be living in mexico city or puebla? I was there this summer and i stood out ALOT. I would likely be taking public transportation most of the time to get around.

Looking forward to any helpful advice :D

Also i would like to move our furniture there, do you know of a cheap and safe mover who would be able to move my things safely, door to door? I am interested in teaching English there, so am i able to do the certificate in mexico?

For forms, you'll want to complete the application for the FM3 visa, probably one that allows you to work. For that you will need your passport, the application, a letter from from your employer - or a letter from you should you wish to teach independently, the fees (total of about 3000 pesos), some photos, and something stating your qualification to teach English.

This class of visa can be completed at the immigration office in Mexico City quite easily. You can be in Mexico on your tourist visa while you wait the approximately 4 weeks it takes for the FM3 to be ready.

You can do a teacher training course in TEFL in Mexico City - I work in that field and can give you more info if you wish, by private message.

Hello All -we have been considering moving to Mexico for the past 2 years .We have travelled to Mexico 3 times in the last 2 years to try and figure out what area of Mexico we would like to live .We know we do not want to be in the tourist area but still not sure where would be best.My wife is in the school administration industry and I am in the medical field - I am currently a Social Service Worker - not sure if there is a possibility to continue that sort of work or not but hoping.
Any Suggestions on where to look and help on getting information on possible leads to find jobs would be great.

Your wife should be able to find lots of opportunities to work, in a number of cities in the interior (since you want to be away from touristy areas). Working in education is an easy area for an English-speaking foreigner as demand is strong for qualified people. As for where, you can basically pull out a map of Mexico and pick from any of the mid-sized to large cities in the interior and there will be opportunities for her, with more in larger centers like Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey.

As for you working as a social worker, I don't think you'll be able to stay in your field. You might be able to slip into education as well, perhaps in counseling (I am guessing here, having no experience in this area) or more likely in teaching ESL/EFL. If you haven't any experience teaching, there are 2 and 4 week courses in several places in Canada and in Mexico to certify as an EFL teacher to get you started.

For your wife, the school year in Mexico begins in mid-August and the top schools put out feelers for new hires as early as January.

Hello,

I have decided to move to Mexico City. Currently I live in Toronto, Ontario. I am Canadian Citizen. I am Piping Designer working with AutoCad, Bently and Solid Works. I was wondering if I can get job similar to my profession? If not, what are my options? I do not speak Spanish (but I’ll need to learn it) what are the procedures of me coming there to live? I would like to find work before I go, but from reading previous postings it probably won’t happen. I can also speak Ukrainian and Russian would that help in any way? How is the salary comparing to the lifestyle?

Any tip, suggestion is greatly appreciated
Thank you,
