Moving to the US as a student

Post Tue Feb 02, 2010 12:01 pm

Hey everyone ! Im a Torontonian who is going to move down to Virginia as a student for the next 2 years.

I had a chat with the school's International Students rep today, and was pleasantly surprised to learn that as a Canadian, I dont have to go through the F1 visa process ! If I understood correctly, all I need is my I-20 from the school, the receipt for the SEVIS fee, and my passport. If thats correct, then what are the remaining logistics around being admitted into the US as a student ? Would it be at the airport when Im flying out ? Or when Im driving into the US while moving all my stuff over ?

Speaking of moving, I'm planning to take my car down there with me. Would this mean that there are going to be import taxes, etc levied upon me ? Would I need to get local insurance, as well as a local drivers license ?

Would love to hear advice from anyone who's been through similar situations :D

Cheers !

Yes, you get F-1 status upon admission to the USA either at the airport PFI or at the border. In addition to the documents noted you should also bring along proof of funding--unless all necessary funding is coming from the school, in which case the I-20 serves this purpose. Even if you had to show proof of funding to the school to get the I-20 in the first place, you should bring those documents to the border as well.

I've never imported a car but certainly you would need local insurance and a local driver's license.

I will also be going to the border soon with an I-20. My sponsor and his bank signed a statement as part of the university application form saying I would have access to the necessary funds.

I am going to ask my sponsor to print out a bank statement and perhaps ask his bank to write a letter confirming he has the funds (even though they confirmed it to the university - it might be better to be safe than sorry).

Does anyone know anything else that should be provided as proof of funds from my sponsor?

One big concern I have is that my sponsor is a "friend" - not a family member. Can anyone foresee any issues with this?

The school will provide info on scholarships and verify your funds before the I-20 is issued. They wiill tell you what proof you need.
The F1 is a government approval based on the I-20 and a criminal background check. Make sure you get the cevis report done.
Most Canadian licenses are accepted for driving in the US. The insrance you would have to check with your insurance company. My son drove his fiances car and was covered by her insurance in SC. He ended up getting his SC license not because he needed it but after 2 years and a clean abstract he avoided the graduated system here in Ontario. He just got his Ontario full license without any test .
