Moving to UK - A Brit and Cannuck some of questions

Post Tue Aug 02, 2011 10:26 am

Hi All,

Looks like my current stay in Canada might be coming to an end and I'll be returning to the UK to start a new job. My wife (Canadian) is considering moving there but not until all the permits have been completed.

I assume we have to apply for a marriage visa? or is it a settlement visa? for her.

Even though she would love to lounge around all day, she wants to work in the UK and is only considering on moving when the visa grants her a work permit of some kind. Does the work permit come with the settlement visa/marriage visa? (I recall a UK/Indian couple and his wife came through a marriage visa and worked in Asda).

Also considering her job is quite high end over in Canada, she wants to stay until there is a formal job offer. So if the UK border agency grants her settlement visa and she remains in Canada would that effect her visa status (in terms of voiding the visa). Could she wait until she gets a job offer?

Also anyone know about the rough cost of shipping say a bedroom set and 2 sofa and a TV?

Many thanks
Pritesh

The best option for your wife would be to apply for a spouse visa, also called settlement visa. With this status, she'll be allowed to live and work in the UK for a probationary period of 2 years, after which she'll be allowed to apply for permanent residency. If you've been married for more than 4 years, she may be granted the permanent residence status straightaway.

Once she's got the visa, she can remain in Canada until she has a job in the UK but if she waits more than 2-3 months, we'd advise her to bring both your latest bank statements to show Immigration Officers at the border in order to prove that you can still support yourselves without public funds.

As for the shipping cost from Canada to UK, it may be cheaper to buy new furniture! But if it's important to her, there's plenty of reliable international moving companies that can give her quotes for free.

Dear Pritesh -
I have a container going to the U.K which is half empty - Let me know if you are interested in 'renting' some space on it.
