Moving to UK for work?

Post Wed Oct 13, 2004 3:28 pm

My husband has just gotten a job offer to work in Loughborough, Leics. We are seriously considering taking it, but I don't even know where to start trying to figure out how to go about this.

We have three kids, I'm at home with them and my husband is working. We'd all be going, and he'd be working there for 2 to 3 years and then would return to Canada and work remotely. We own a house here, and we'd like to have it be rented while we were away (managed by a rental company) so that we could return to it eventually.

Today someone told me that unless we sell everything here, remove all our RRSP's and bank accounts etc., we will have to pay tax to Canada as well as the UK. Is that correct???

I had thought deciding how to move and then organize our lives in England would be hardest part of this, but now I'm hearing this I'm feeling more than a bit frustrated.

My father was born in England, and so I am eligible for a UK passport. My husband and children will be able to get an EU passport through Hungary where his father was born (until January grandchildren are eligible). My understanding is that he can work in the UK with an EU passport. It seems that part should be easy enough.

ARGH!! Anyone in a similar situation who can help me figure all of this out before we have to accept or decline the job offer??

Thanks

You're right about the passports - so I don't think any of you will have a problem needing a visa. Though I would check in the case of the Hungarian passports, just in case there's a restriction, since Hungary is a fairly recent entry to the EU.

As regards the tax - double taxation can be a complex issue and varies with circumstances. As such, I'd say you'd be best off talking to an accountant who specialises in tax, and/or getting information from the tax authorities in Canada and the UK.

As far as the UK goes you may find some information on www.inlandrevenue.gov.uk
