Moving To Wellington For At Least 6 Months...

Post Tue Mar 04, 2008 3:26 pm

Hi There!

I'm a Canadian who has traveled all over my own country and even a little in the States but I'm new to international travel. So I need all the help I can get.

I'm moving to live with a friend in Wellington, NZ for at least 6 months come July. I might try to stay longer through the summer until at least March. Currently I live at home and work at restaurant. I'd like to get into the same kind of work when I get there just for some spending money.

Could anyone tell me how easy it is to find work in that field in Wellington & also Auckland? - we'll be staying there for a bit. How much does the average service employee make in NZ?

I am getting more and more confused by the working VISA system and was hoping someone could explain it. How much is it? What do I need to qualify?

I'm a big music fan also.does anyone have any inside info on concerts or shows?

I'm sure I have many more questions but I'll leave it at that for now.haha
THANKS!

Hey Kat27,

I notice you posted this a while ago, and probably have all the answers now, but anywho, my 2 cents for what it's worth.

You'll probably be fine finding waitressing work in either Auckland or Wellington, just don't rely on tips like you would in Canada or the States. You're probably looking at about 11, 12 bucks an hour maybe? It's not particularly good pay here.

Sorry, no idea about the visa situations - only have experience with getting a visa for Canada.

If you're Wellington, check out thepackage.co.nz for gigs and shows at local bars, pubs and clubs. Most of the acts playing at the bars and clubs you probably won't recognise as they're usually just local or kiwi groups, but a lot are still worth checking out. Pays to ask some locals about who and what's worth seeing.

Have fun :)
