MOVING

Post Fri Feb 22, 2008 9:25 am

Hello all,

I am moving to the UK on March 26th 2008. I need to confirm a few things hopefully you will be able to help me.

I am a Canadian citizen. However I am also a Portuguese citizen and I have a Portuguese passport. i was told that if I use my Portuguese passport, I do not need a visa to live and work in the UK. Is that so?

Also, when you moved. How did you ship your stuff ans how expensive was it. I don't have furniture, just 6 or 7 boxes of clothes and personal items.

I await your reply.

Cheers all!

As Portugal is a member of the EU, you can live and work in the UK. More information here:

I only brought suitcases, so can't answer your question about shipping!

Hey,

Thanks for the info. That really reassures me. I guess I need to thank my parents for having registered me at the Portuguese consulate when i was young as that has now saved me all the hassle of a vise and stuff. :P

After looking into my stuff I probably won't even have THAT much to send. You say you only brought suitcases. How many were you entitled to bring? Because I seem to only have the right to one?

I came over years ago, so it might be different now - and depends on the airline. I flew Air Canada - you were allowed 2 bags. Then when I went home at Christmas, I took an empty one back and filled it up again.

If you're renting, fully furnished flats are common - so you don't need a lot, just personal things. Put your music on an MP3 player, then you don't need to bring all your CDs, etc.

Fully furnished flats are common in certain parts of the Uk :P

When I moved to brighton the first time, they were the exception. Wound up having to fully furnish my place as there were none available, and since I've been looking again this is still the case.

I believe in the london area they are more plentiful and if you are looking for shared acommodation this also is the case.

When I looked at shipping things over it was cheaper just to buy new furniture rather than bring the stuff I had over. So it's all going into storage at my parents place until as such time as I decide to sell it or make use of it. :)

As you just have personal items I would just break it down to essentials and take what you can with you.you'll find you don't need as much as you think you do, and certainly not all of it for the price you'll pay in shipping.
