A k1 can take up to a year, but I think the Average time is closer to 6 months. When it comes to immigration, nothing is set in stone, lol. With the k1, once u have the interview, then activate it at the border (or POE), you then have 90 days to get married.

During my naturalization ceremony back in Decemeber, the USCIS lady gave usd a "talk" and she stated that kids 18 and younger of newly naturalized citizens were now considered to be USA citizens(some paperwork to be filled out) but over 18, was a different case. I have never looked into the "age" as it doesn't pertain to me. As well be aware of what lawyers tell ya, always good to interview more than 1, have read many stories on VJ about bad lawyers. like any other profession, their are good ones and bad ones. No one cares about your situation any more than urself, so do the research and protect urself.

90 days is not quite 3 months. And really, ample time to plan a wedding.

I have a friend in NZ and what he says about immigration consultants is this: "There are salesmen. There are used car salesmen. And then there are immigration consultants." There was an article in the Toronto Star about the subject and there have been enormous numbers of complaints about consultants in Toronto.

I had some pretty bad experiences when I lived in the US, fortunately I made friends with a guy who worked for INS.

Actually if you've got the patience for it one of the better ideas is to make an appointment and go to the local USCIS office and talk to someone. Not sure if you can still do that since everything went on the web but I did it once. After waiting literally all day on hold to talk to someone at the Texas Service Center. :x

I belive they no longer accept walk ins,you have to make a Infopass appointment. I'm sure if ya look on http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis you can find info or locate your local office

Back in 2002 when we started looking into me moving to the USA, they didnt have Infopass--it was 1st come first served. My wife waited ALL day to talk with an agent at our office! he told her it was extremly difficult to do, and he stated, ur best to use a lawyer, lol He was SOOOO wrong!! Wish we had found visajourney earlier on and saved us $2500!!

Yea I know my dad ended up not getting one, he is a lawyer himself and my mom is a paralegal, so they know some of the stuff. My dad explained alot to us about it and what my options are. We also just spoke to my boyfriends parents and his mom had to go through the same thing when she immigrated to the US. We are going to go with either the Fiance one or me getting in to school. Were going to go down to the nearest embasy in toronto to get the paperwork and everything cleared before we send in anything.

I was actually at the consulate in Toronto. One can just walk in--ya take a # and wait! Hope you have better luck, they could not tell me much, and told me to download the forms online. That was after a hour or so wait. Was back in 2003, so things most likely have changed
