National Insurance Number help!

Hi everyone!

I just got my youth mobility visa, and i'm headin to the UK for 3 months on September 23rd.
From what I hear, applying for a NIN is a pain... any suggestions? Should I apply for a job, obtain a temporary NIN, and then apply for the permanant one? How do I get a temporary number?

You cannot apply for the NIN until you are in the UK. It can take a few weeks to be issued the actual number, but be sure to have original's of proof documents (passport, drivers license, birth cert, national identity card) as many as possible to prove who you are and where you are from.

If you get a job before a NIN number (which is a good idea unless you have tons of cash) your employer lists you for tax purposes as an Emergency NIN. you pay more tax than a normal NIN # but you can reclaim this tax once you are issued your own NIN.
