National Insurance Number... must read!

Post Sat Oct 08, 2011 8:25 am

I was really worried when I was coming over here, because I've heard horror stories regarding national insurance numbers. Well I have good news for all your canucks heading over to England.. it took me 2 WEEKS to get mine! I called up the Jobcentre plus number, they sent an application 3 days later. Filled out the application, sent it back, and a week later, I have my number. It's not bad! So don't worry.

Just thought I'd share my amazing news!

thats great news - only 2-weeks eh!

For others reading this

When you made the application, did you mail it in or take it back to the jobcentre.

What was all of the information that you had to provide with your application (originals or photocpies)

That is great news!

I'm moving to London soon pending paperwork & was curious about the NIN application process.

Would be interested in hearing the documentation needed to apply for one!

General info on how to get a National insurance number

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAnd ... /DG_190057

http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/ni/intro/number.htm

What happens when you apply for a National Insurance number

Jobcentre Plus will arrange an 'Evidence of Identity' interview for you or send you a postal application. If relevant, they will confirm the date, time and location of your interview and what information/documentation you need to support your application.

What to expect at the 'Evidence of identity' interview

The interview will usually be one-to-one (unless, for example, you need an interpreter). You will be asked questions about why you need a National Insurance number, your background and circumstances.
You will also have to prove your identity. Bring as many 'identity documents' (originals, not photocopies) as you can to your interview. Examples of documents which count are:

•valid passport (UK or foreign)
•national identity card (UK or foreign)
•residence permit or residence card including biometric immigration residency documents
•full birth or adoption certificate
•full marriage or civil partnership certificate
•driving licence (UK or foreign)

If you don't have any of these - or other - identity documents you still must go to the interview. The information you are able to provide might be enough to prove your identity.
During the interview a National Insurance number application form will be completed and you will be asked to sign it.

All that I did was give them a call. They asked me some questions and sent me a package in the mail. I received that within a few days - filled out the application that was sent and made a copy of my passport. Threw that in the envelope that they sent and voila! Within about a week of doing that, I had my NIN sent to me. Very easy!

Hi what sort of questions do they ask you when you call them?

I'd like to know as it might help people answer them 'correctly' and thereby avoid having to go in for an interview.

Thanks!

Read this first

http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/MoneyTaxAnd ... /DG_190057

Basically you'll need proof that you are allowed to live in the UK & do so ... like, where do you live, contact details etc

Then all of the personal ID to prove who you are

That should do it

Thanks Portico thats really helpful. I was a bit worried because I've been in the UK for 6 years on a temporary NI, I don't think I've done anything wrong as I've had a visa the entire time, and worked as an employee throughout and have never been asked about my NI number before.

Now I am starting a new job but my new employer wants a permanent NI and this is why I am inquiring.

I'm guessing now this process is more about checking you are legally allowed to work in the UK and proof of identity.

Thanks a lot
