Need a job, going stir-crazy... ;)

Post Wed Apr 11, 2007 8:36 am

Hello, fellow Canadians! =)

I moved from Seoul, Korea, to the Heidelberg area at the end of February of this year in order to be with my bf, who is stationed here. After a couple of weeks of settling in, I started my job search. I am a certified Canadian elementary school teacher, and although I was aware I was arriving at a tough time of year to find a teaching position for this semester, I didn't expect to be unemployed this long. My heart lies in the classroom, and I am VERY anxious to get back to that atmosphere.

I am also worried about time running out. I have until the end of May for the three allotted months, but I will be back in Canada from May 1-29 for vacation/friend's wedding. I am terrified I will not be permitted to come back into the country for three more months.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can extend my stay/find a job/take courses, etc in order to stay longer? I also have 4 years experience working at banks while obtaining my university degrees. please help! I have exhausted all options I could think of.

One more thing -- I have noticed a lot of people feel a bit stranded as I do, not knowing the language and not having people to chill with upon occasion. I would be happy to meet up with people in Heidelberg, for shopping, coffee, sightseeing, taking photos (a passion of mine), etc. I love in Gauangelloch, and can be in downtown Heidelberg within an hour :)

Cheers, and thanks in advance for any help you can offer! =)

Hello! Maybe you should enroll into a German integration language course. That was the only way I was able to get a visa (study visa) which is good for one year. I go 3 times a week to the local Volkshochschule (which is cheap - only €150 every 3 months) and I´ve met some great people and I´m learning the language - which I think is a must! Otherwise I think the only jobs available for us is to teach English. I hope I helped and good luck!

Being a teacher should help, you, I heard that it's quite easy sometimes to be an english teacher here.

Other than that, computer jobs are sometimes not to hard to get if even if you don't speak german.

Do you have German work permission yet?

Without permission you won't be able to work here legally.

I live in the Stuttgart area and work for the US Army here, I am a Canadian who has been here for 9 years now.
They have a civilian personnel website with their jobs that are available.
Take Care,

TO MOERSCHIE:
Thank you so much for your advice -- I have been exploring German Language schools in the Heidelberg area, but the prices seem to range from 80~220 Euro a week! Eeeek! Perhaps you got lucky? Maybe I am not looking in the right places or with the proper words via the search engines.

To other responses, thank you as well! I would be very interested in more information about how I can secure a position on base here in Heidelberg, through NATO, or another organization that hires Canadians! =)
