Need advice on moving back to Canada! (with a kid and dog!)

Post Wed Jan 02, 2008 2:41 am

Hi all -

After 6 years in Sydney we're on our way back to Montreal. We arrived here just married, with a small case of clothes, books and CDs, and not a care in the world! 6 years later we have a child, a dog, and a house full of stuff! And we have to find a way to get it all back with hopefully not too many dramas.

Does anyone have ay advice on shipping companies (we're probably looking at a full container!) and/or traveling with pets?

Thanks so much!

No idea. But I'm interested in knowing how much it's going to cost.

We've always planned on staying here about 3 years so I'll be looking at shipping things back myself. If you get any quotes I'd love to know.

Quotes so far

So far I've had 3-4 quotes which range from 6 - 8k, and that includes packing, shipping, unpacking in Montreal and taking away the boxes (aka full service). I know you can save a bit by doing some of the work yourself or picking your tuff up at port, but I'm looking for easier rather than cheaper.

Wow, that's great.

When we moved here from Fort McMurray we were quoted $15,000 for a 20 foot container! We said forget it. So we sold off some of our crappier furniture and put the rest in storage at my in-laws for free.

We only brought our suitcases with us. We managed to get clothes, DVD, some kids toys, and hockey and golf equipment. Everything else was bought in Brisbane. I'd love to bring it all back with us as long as the price isn't too bad. So, it looks like we'll be bringing it with us when the time comes :D

Sorry I couldn't help you out at all, but thanks for helping me out!

If you want basic info on international shipping companies you could try looking here:

http://britishexpats.com/forum/search.p ... hid=680262

That link is from a UK site, but there's lots of people moving to and from Australia so it's a good place to look for opinions on some of the international shipping places.

You can do more searches by clicking on the search forum link near the top left. Then you'd have to pick which forums you want to look in on the right side of the page.
