secondly, i have heard bague staements that when working down there, if you don't have some sort of tax number, you'll end up paying extra taxes. where do i get this tax number, or how does it work?

I probably wouldn't sell your computer unless it won't work on the voltage here.

Have a look at the back of the computer where the power comes in. If it says 100-240V and a50-60Hz then you're ok (there may be a switch for this). Check the monitor as well. If the power is ok then all you will need is a cheap plastic adaptor piece to allow it to plug into the wall. Had we decided to ship our things we would have brought our computer, monitor and printer since they all had dual voltage.

We bought a brand new laptop just before we came over, we just made sure it would work here. I've since discovered that the same laptop here cost about 2-3 times what we bought it for two months ago. I don't think they're always that more expensive, but since we had just purchased a computer in Canada we were pretty confident that they definitely cost more here.

If you are allowed to work here then you can get a tax file number (TFN) very easily. If you work and don't have one then you pay about 45% of your wage in taxes I think. So you really need to get one. As long as you have a visa that allows you to work in the country then you can get one.

It's very easy to apply. We did ours online after we arrived. But you need some sort of permanent address to get it since the number actually arrives in the mail up to 28 days later (ours only took about a week). I think we just needed our address and passport number. If you read the above link I posted then you can find out a litle more.

Hope that helps.

Nope, once you get your TFN there, you get taxed just like an Australian resident.

If you are on a 457 visa, then you do not pay the medicare levy tax. Also, on a 457 they do not care about Canadian income. Once you become a PR of aussie, they will be interested in your worldwide income. So if you are, try to establish non-resident status in Canada: ie. close bank accounts, cancel health care etc.

Why don't you check out this website to get a rough idea on what you'll get taxed there: http://calculators.ato.gov.au/scripts/asp/simpletaxcalc/main.asp

On $1500/week, you'll pay roughly $19050 in taxes per year. That's net $1133/week.
