New to the site...New to US/CAN tax....

Post Wed Dec 17, 2008 7:38 am

Hi everyone, My name is Zach and I moved to the US on a TN-1 in July. I understand that for this taxation year I will have to file both Can and US tax forms.
At this point I do not have plans to return to Canada but with a TN that is not what US immigration wants to hear.... so How should I claim home tax? Do I claim Canada for 2008, and see what happens after that.....I do have an Ontario drivers Lic and plated vehicle, bank account and credit card...

Any advice from people in simillar situations pleas jump in.

There are tons of threads on here, do a search, basically you have to file a 1040NR and an 8840 in the US and file a T1 in Canada and claim a foreign tax credit. The general guide for the T1 explains how to claim the credit and report income from your W-2.

Have a read of http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/E/pub/tg/p151/README.html and IRS publication 519.
Steve.
