New US Citizen, Former Canadian, Social Security Question

New US Citizen, Former Canadian, Social Security Question

Hi there. Haven’t lived in Canada since 1993 (I think, pretty close to it) I just got my US Citizenship September 30th 08

Realistically have no intention of ever returning to Canada. This is where I own homes, Cars, Companies and Pets *smile*

My Question: Since the US and Canada have a Social Security Agreement, Can I have my Canadian Pension Plan (Social Insurance) contributions transferred to my US Social Security Program?

Anyone know what my options are?

Hope to hear back soon.

Best Regards,

~Aaron

Yes, with the tax treaty you can have your CPP payments added to your Social Security, IF you worked enough years in Canada to qualify for it.

The info in in the HRDC website somewhere

It's actually the social security totalization agreement, not the tax treaty. You basically get the combination of the two, i.e. the years you contributed to CPP count as years towards your social security in the US.
