Hello,

I currently work in the offshore industry in Louisiana. 6 weeks here and then 2 home to Newfoundland. Me and My fiance (to be wed in 3 weeks) are both from Newfoundland working at the same place. We both have taken jobs in Texas, to start early May. We are trying to get a house there, so we need a mortgage, and we are trying to get a car also. I can't seem to get any help on this issue. I keep searching the internet but have found no good advice.can someone anyone tell me what bank to go with or any advice.we both have TN visa's, SIN numbers in the states, and good credit back home. Anything at this point would help us.thanks

It depends on whether you intend on staying in the US permanently. Given the credit crunch in the US at the moment it's hard for your average American to get a mortgage. It might work out better to get a mortgage from a Canadian bank to pay for the house. If you intend on repatriating all your money to Canada then it will work out better that way as you will know what your mortgage repayments are, as they will be in Canadian dollars. Ditto for a bank loan to buy a car.

Getting a secured credit card from a US bank is a good way to start a credit history there. There's a thread on here about transferring American Express etc. down there as well.

What I did was get a credit card through the phone company as they base your credit risk on your phone bill payments. At least Bellsouth did.

Yes, with all the credit concerns right now it may be a bit difficult to get a loan. Nevertheless, you can try the popular mortgage lenders (they still have to make money).
A simple way to get some loan quotes is to goto http://www.zillow.com and fill out a mortgage request. You will have numerous lenders call you and provide you quotes.

The only caveat we are aware of is since you are on a temporary visa, you may have to put down 10% as a downpayment.

Good Luck.
