Couple of years in US

Canadians in the USA

Couple of years in US

Hi,

I am a Canadian citizen and my wife is us citizen with Canadian permanent residency. We live in Canada. We are exploring how we could go and work a couple of years in the us...
What is the best and easiest option ?
I am aware of the TN visa but I am programmer so I don't think it can work. We already have a process started with getting me sponsored for permanent us residency (we are at a point were we have the application on hold and call every year to maintain the application still open). But does that make sense to get permanent us residency for 2 years and losing it after... also would my wife lose her canadian permanency ?
Tax wise, I own a place in Canada... how would that work ?

Thanks for your help. Fab

CFL Playoffs and The 2009 Grey Cup!

Expat Social Events Worldwide

CFL Playoffs and The 2009 Grey Cup!

Hey guys - I'm brand new here - but I thought I should share this with you. IF you're anything like me - and you're missing home... well, there are certain "comforts" that we start to crave. And one of the things that I'm missing most at this time of year is my CFL Playoffs - and the Grey Cup game.

So imagine my surprise when I'm surfing the CFL website and I discover that you can watch the games live over the Internet!! I'm going to hook my laptop up to my TV and throw a REAL Grey Cup Party (and probably have the mates over for the playoff games, just to get them prepped for the big game!)!

So if you're interested - just go to the CFL website, click on the Video tab on the top, and choose "Watch Live". Then follow the directions from then on.

I'm SO excited! Now, if only I could find a "suitable amount" of Kokanee and some Hawkin's Cheezies - I'd be in heaven! :D

Enjoy the games!! (GO LIONS GO!! 8) )

Canadian in US applying for UK Ancestry... HELP!

UK Visas and Immigration

Canadian in US applying for UK Ancestry... HELP!

Hello everyone,

I first want to say thanks for reading my post. I have found this forum very helpful applying for my visa. I am in the US and have applied for the UK Ancestry Visa. My biometrics appointment was Oct. 18th. I sent all my documents to the British Consulate in Los Angeles, and I have proof from Fedex saying they signed for it yesterday (Oct. 19th). I have yet to receive a email saying they have my documents. Does anyone know how long they take to email you back? And does anyone have an idea how long till i will have my Passport and Visa back in my hand? I have 2 separate jobs lined up, but they need to hire someone asap. I am also worried that since it is Thanksgiving here in the US next week it will delay my application.

Thanks in advance,

Doug

trying to decide on U.S. or canadian tax status

Canadians in the USA

trying to decide on U.S. or canadian tax status

Hi Steve not sure if this is where I go to ask a question but here goes.... moved to the U.S. on TN status... plan to stay about 3 years. Would like to keep my tax status as Canadian - taxes in the U.S. will be more than in Canada so not worried about getting double taxed. What are the U.S. tax implications? what U.S. tax form would I file?

I am assuming that I would be taxed in the U.S. as a resident is though - basically payroll deductions. is this assumption correct or would I face some additional witholding ?

Story on how RAMQ pays for US medical costs

Story on how RAMQ pays for US medical costs

http://www.montrealgazette.com/health/Stuck with hospital bill/2243689/story.html

RAMQ covered $900 of a $16,000 4-day hospital stay.

This illustrates the fallacy of maintaining OHIP etc, by painstakingly trying to hold on to Cdn tax residency instead of making a a clean break.

Carrying OHIP coverage while in US (without supplemental insurance) just doesn't cut it.

Permanent Resident + Canadian = ???

Canadians in the USA

Permanent Resident + Canadian = ???

Let me preface by saying I've done my research, but unfortunately it seems that cases have so many variables it's better to just ask.

I'm a Permanent Resident, who will be able to apply for Citizenship in roughly October 2010. I am a Canadian citizen, but have since moved to California where I now work. I have a girlfriend who is a Canadian citizen, who wants to move with me sometime next year (say June 2010). She is a high school teacher, with a B.Sc in Biology. The plan is to have her immigrate.

I've been looking around a lot, but haven't been able to find anything that really applies. Here's a list of possible solutions, let me know what you think, or suggest new ones.

  • She comes in on a B-2, and can indefinitely extend it due to co-habitation every 6 months for the cost of $300. She can't work (??), but she can live here until I become a citizen and can petition for a K-1 visa (We may become engaged shortly, regardless of immigration).
  • We become engaged and petition for a K-1 as a Permanent Resident (it isn't clear to me if this is possible). She gets to stay legally while the paperwork is being processed (??), then she can live and work here.
  • She gets an H1-B Visa. This is probably not the best option, since it's hard enough to get them anyways.
  • She gets a TN visa as a biologist (anyone know what range of jobs that covers?)

The route that seems the most expedient/legal is to have her on a B-2 and renew stays for co-habitation until I am a citizen and can get a K-1. The only problem is that her intent is to immigrate, not visit. She can spoof intent to remain in Canada (has her entire family there, bank accounts, has lived there her entire life) but I don't want to do anything illegal. And unfortunately TN visas don't apply for high school teachers (which is some mad BS, who wouldn't want a science/math teacher?).

And it doesn't seem like any options (aside from H1-B visa, or a TN visa as a biologist) allow her to work until K-1 time (which sounds like it could be almost 2 years from now).

So what's the best way to have her stay in the US with intent to immigrate? It's okay if she can't work while she stays, what's important is that she's here. Also, a K-1 visa will allow her to stay indefinitely as well as work?

Bringing Car BACK to canada

General discussion

Bringing Car BACK to canada

I moved to US (NC) in 2000 and also moved my car with me (at the time it was not paid off)
It was paid off in Nov 2003
Now Nov 2009 I am moving back to Canada.
Problem I do not have a title as in Canada there are no Titles. Ford Credit Canada simply sent me aletter stating that it is paid off. NC DMV have told me that they issued a title and sent it to Ford Credit Canada, who have claimed no to have received it (back in 2000)

Ford Credit Canada can send me a Release of the Lean on my Car, will that be enough to cross the border.. The US side requires a title but Canada had no title system.

On the Canadian side I spoke to the Canada Border agency they told me that if the car was originally registered in Canada and I have the original registration then I can simply just go to the Border and tell them that I am bringing the car back. - is this true do I still need the US side export document or similar paper?

When they say registration in Canada they mean the plates - correct?

What Can I do to get the title as Canada has no titles?

Aany help is appreciated
