I read somewhere that it is possible to 'link' my Canadian and UK accounts so that I won't incur all those horrible fees every time I need to get money out. Does anyone know if this is true?
Some sort of easy online transfer that doesn't cost at least $15.00 a go?

I've been searching the net, but I haven't been successful and the people at my bank in Canada seem to know even less ...

Does anyone have any tips for navigating the British system for getting a mortgage? Despite excellent credit in Canada and sufficient funds for a downpayment there appears to be some barriers in getting a mortgage here (for instance HSBC says you must have been a customer with them for a year in Canada first, not in their small print however....).

Has anyone opened a Barclays International account? It says you need a job paying a minimum of £24K OR a minimum deposit of £5,000. I certainly don't have a job paying £24,000 (I don't even have a job in the UK yet and it won't be that much either) but I have the £5,000 that I can put into it.

Although a British citizen I have lived in Canada for 32 years. I will become totally non resident in Canada, leaving no posessions, family behind when I relocate to the UK later this year.

My question concerns where I will pay taxes.

Income from Canada will be CPP, private pension plan, RIF and eventual OAS. When I direct these payments to go into a UK back account will tax be deducted at source in Canada? ...

Just to get it out of the way, no, I don't work for Barclays, or anyone for that matter... stupid job market. The route I've chosen may not be for everyone, but it's far cheaper than signing up for a one year contract to a bank account that should by all rights be free. Luckily, I have the luxury of being able to live off my wife, but I fully understand that others coming here ...

If I sign up with your account while in Canada, the only option is to open your International Bank Account. Is it possible to switch to your Classic Account once I arrive in the UK?
