nj driving licence and alberta id card

Post Tue Aug 02, 2011 4:41 pm

I'm currently studying in NJ for a graduate program and got a provisional driving licence after passing my road test last week having never driven before. In Alberta, I have an ID card in lieu of a driving licence. Now, I understand it is illegal to have driving licences in two jurisdications so I'm wondering if it is necessary for me to surrender my Alberta ID.

I'm also wondering how this affects my Canadian/Alberta residency status and Alberta healthcare coverage. I'm in the US on a student visa so at this point I plan to return to Canada when I'm finished with my program.

I'm 25 years old if this matters; my family is in Alberta; I only visit home 3 or 4 weeks in year.

You should be able to get a temporary DL in NJ. There is nothing wrong with having two, as the NJ is only valid for the length of your status in the USA.

Thanks. The one I have is a "probationary auto license" for a year expiring Dec 29, 2012. Do you have any idea where I would be able to verify this? I have been looking online at both DMV's and not much is said about my case.
