Hello,

I am a Canadian Teacher moving to Dubai in August. I am wanting to claim non-residency, to avoid paying taxes to the Canadian Gov't. Any advice from a fellow expat who has gone through this process would be greatly appreciated. I don't own a home, have no spouse and no children in Canada. I am wondering about the secondary ties, and specifically the canadian bank account and canadian credit card that needs to be discontinued. Any advice on a good international bank with credit/debit/checking privlidges? Our school is setting up accounts for the teachers via Emirates Bank, but I want to set up a seperate bank account so I have money for arrival and for emergency purposes.

You don't need to ditch your Canadian bank account, you just need to make sure it has your foreign address on it and you have declared to the bank that you are non-resident so they can withhold Part XIII tax.
