NR Canada Taxes

Post Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:14 pm

I filed as a nonresident in Canada last year and a resident in the US. I contacted CRA and was told to send them a check for taxes and let them know I was now a nonresident and they would update my financial institutions. In Feb, I received two non-resident notices of assessment from CRA. It seems I underpaid by about $1.50 and they are charging me $10 in interest! The thing is, I can't figure out where they got their numbers from. I took mine from my T5 (box 13) and T3 (box 50) slips last year.

Also, I think I'm supposed to get NR4 forms from my Canadian financial institutions, right? I ended up getting a T3 from one and nothing from the rest. So I'm not sure how to report the income. I'm going to try calling them to see if they can send me the forms.

Thanks.

T3 is for income from a trust. You'd have to talk to the CRA to see how they've done their sums. There might be a mistake on the slips so they've calculated based on that, that wouldn't be your fault so you might be able to get them to waive the interest.
