NZer working in the USA remotely from Canada

Post Fri Jun 17, 2011 11:40 am

I am a New Zealand citizen living in Vancouver with a Type 20 work visa which allows me to work in Canada. I have secured a 2-3 month contract from a company that is based in the USA. I will be working remotely from Canada, and wont need to visit the USA at all.

My questions are :
1) What is the easiest arrangement for getting paid? I will only be working for 3 months, so I dont think it is worth setting up an incorporated company (if I am even allowed with my visa?). Is the umbrella company route a good option, and can anyone recommend any reputable ones?
Edit: On further investigation, it doesnt look like the notion of an umbrella company exists in Canada. Am I on the wrong track here?

2) I will be getting paid in USD. Will all of my tax obligations lie in Canada? Will I owe anything in the US?

Any advice is greatly appreciated
Thanks
Brendan

Assuming your visa allows you to work for yourself, and not strictly for a Cdn employer, then

1. Self-employed.
2. You will only be taxable in canada.

You would need to check if your visa type allows non-Cdn employement, or self-employement while in canada
