One thing after another....should we even bother?

Post Thu Mar 17, 2011 9:46 pm

We have an opportunity to move to the US, I have an L1B family has L2's. I needed the L1B because I have US based clients and I do travel down frequently to work. We have always thought about moving to the US, this could be our chance.
Regarding moving, we are trying to look at everything involved to ensure we are making the right choice based on having an L1B max stay for us would be 5 years.
We just got over the shock of health care costs in the US, we currently pay $0 per month, looks like it is going to now cost us $450/month minimum.
Now we need to look at taxes. We plan to sell our home but we will have to keep bank accounts open due to a line of credit that will have a balence and a car loan. I am not even sure where to start when it comes to taxes. Will we have to fill in taxes in both countries for the next 5 years? Are we paying double tax? Is there a tax treaty? If so, what does that mean?

There must be some sort of publication out there, I am sure people move all the time without trying to be a non - resident of Canada? Help!! I think I have alot of reading to do.

I would be looking to move there when the U.S. economy is full employment again at 4.4% unemployment. Currently, it is 8.9% with many millions of Americans to be reabsorbed back into the work force.
Unemployment is coming down very, very, slowly.

Yes, health care costs are a major consideration.

My advice is to do your homework ahead of time and research everything carefully before making a commitment.
