Ontarian in Sydney!

Post Sat Jul 09, 2011 2:55 am

So I have just moved to Sydney, Australia from Ontario, Canada about two weeks ago. I know it's still early but I feel that because it's such a big city and I'm working from home (I am a nanny), it's very hard to meet people! I am very outgoing and am used to doing a lot on the weekends like going out with my girlfriends and so not having my friends here has been difficult. I see everyone out and about at night and I have been stuck in the house because I have no one to go out with or site see with! I am energetic and love to get out there and have fun, I would love to get together with some fellow canucks to travel around with!I want to check out a bunch of the pubs in my area too (newtown area) and like checking out the eclectic little shops. If your new to this country and need travel buddy please feel free to contact me :)

Hi,

I am currently in the beginning stages of moving to Sydney. I did an exchange a few years ago in Perth and loved it!

Any suggestions on which Visas to apply for and hints on how you found work (did you find work before moving or did you find jobs only after you arrived in Australia?)

Tips on flights and house hunting, really anything you would be able to share would be greatly appreciated!

Hope you are enjoying your time there!

Hi There

I am originally from Toronto and have been in Sydney for 2 years now. It is difficult to meet people and it can get kinda lonely sometimes

Newtown is always fun with a group of people-count me in for beer

Hey! I'm from Ontario and have been to Australia a few times, one of those times I lived in Surfers Paradise for 3 months on a working holiday visa. I also found it lonely until I met some friends. My recommendation, especially since you are in Sydney, would be to visit the hostels! A number of people actually live in hostels for long periods of time until they get settled and find an apartment. The best one I stayed at was YHA Railway Square, right next to the central train station. It has a great vibe, close to restaurants and bars, and provides an excellent opportunity to meet people! Maybe try going out for a few of their social events? Otherwise, listen for other Canadian accents while you are sitting at the park or beach (or wherever) and say hello! I dream of moving back to Australia some day, perhaps more permanently, but it is very hard to get in, especially if you do not fall under the Skilled Migrants list. I currently work in administration but have years of experience working and managing in the food and beverage industry. If you or anyone else has any recommendations for me, I would love to read them!

Best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy living there! When you get a chance, go and travel the coast! I travelled Cairns to Kangaroo Island/Adelaide.. it was the best part of my whole experience there! The Whitsunday Islands are breathtaking! I recommend the boat "Summertime". Enjoy yourself there and don't give up. You will meet people and settle in eventually!
