Hey! I'm from Ontario and have been to
Australia a few times, one of those times I lived in Surfers Paradise for 3 months on a working holiday visa. I also found it lonely until I met some friends. My recommendation, especially since you are in Sydney, would be to visit the hostels! A number of people actually live in hostels for long periods of time until they get settled and find an apartment. The best one I stayed at was YHA Railway Square, right next to the central train station. It has a great vibe, close to restaurants and bars, and provides an excellent opportunity to meet people! Maybe try going out for a few of their social events? Otherwise, listen for other Canadian accents while you are sitting at the park or beach (or wherever) and say hello! I dream of moving back to Australia some day, perhaps more permanently, but it is very hard to get in, especially if you do not fall under the Skilled Migrants list. I currently work in administration but have years of experience working and managing in the food and beverage industry. If you or anyone else has any recommendations for me, I would love to read them!
Best of luck to you and I hope you enjoy living there! When you get a chance, go and travel the coast! I travelled Cairns to Kangaroo Island/Adelaide.. it was the best part of my whole experience there! The Whitsunday Islands are breathtaking! I recommend the boat "Summertime". Enjoy yourself there and don't give up. You will meet people and settle in eventually!
