Hi there. I am a Canadian working in the US on TN. Is it necessary to replace the plates if I'm in the US on a Temp basis. I have Canadian insurance. What if I get into an accident, will the Canadian insurance cover the third party damage cost.

Is there an insurance company in the US will insurace a Ontario vehicle with Ontario plates? What is the best way to handle my situation?

Thanks

Me again.

My insurance agent in Canada would not cover me when I began working in the states. I had to get Michigan registration and insurance. I would doubt that any reputible US agent will cover you with Ontario registration.

I think depending on the state will depend on how long you can keep your Ontario plates and insurance valid. Some it may be 30 days, or as much as 90 days, but eventually you will need state plates and insurance. And driver's license.

When I lived in MN 10 years ago, I kept my Ontario car and plates, but got a MN driver's license. I still had coverage from my insurance co, having told them my move was temporary, which it was (although I didn't know that at the time.) I was there for 13 mos. However, I'm considering a move to Denver so would appreciate hearing others' more recent experience with this.

I have been in the USA for almost 2 years now and I have have had my car (ontario plates and registration) all this time. I am working in Virginia and yes the law is to change everything over to usa stuff within 30 days, but I just can't give up being canadian just like that so I kept everyting including my driver's lisence. Virginia wanted me to trade my ontario liscence for a virginia temp liscence that would expire in 1 year. What does americans think us canadians are crazy. No way am I giving up my beloved canadian stuff. Ok back to my initial point:

If want to keep your canadian stuff. then call progressive insurnace in usa. they will insure you even if you keep your ontario liscence and plates and driver's liscence. Progressive is very flexiable. In Ontario PC Financial Auto insurance will insure you while you are in the usa but they are very expensive and for peace of mind. its better to have an usa insurnace company while you drive in their land.

you can keep your plates for souvenirs, you would just need to exchange your license card and get new state plates. It is illegal to keep your Canadian driver's license and you can get yourself into quite a lot of trouble by not switching to a state driver's license.

I still have the last set of Ontario plates I had before I moved, but not on my car.

I have Ont plates working in Denver. My insurence says I can be out of province for 6 months at a time. So as long as I cross back accross the border at 6 months then I'm good.
