Ontario resident moving to Southern California

Post Mon Aug 23, 2010 10:52 am

Hi
I'm new to this forum. I've spend the last 2 hours going through as many posts as possible .. I get the general idea .. still have a few questions. To any one who can point in the right direction thank you and god bless...

We've decided to move as a family to SOCAL. I've been applying to jobs ( IT management) and I have responses I'm interviewing over next couple of weeks.
The initial offers will probably be W2 ... is what I have been told - Do I have to set up a Co in Canada and in the US to get favourable tax treatment ?
Is there any link here to some one who can help me set up co here ?

Can I apply for a Social insurance # before I get the offer ?
HOw long does it take to get a Dirving license? Can we transfer our Driving record and insurance history or do we have to start over again ?

Thanks

To move you will need a TN, so you might as well move your TN questions to the forum in my signature, and any tax and SS questions to the tax link below.

You're moving from Canada, so no need for any Cdn company since you are severing ties with Canada.
This site is a travel site and not best source for these topics:
TN and TD info: http://forums.immigration.com/forumdisp ... -TN-Status
For US/Cdn taxes and SS/CPP:forums.serbinski.com/index.php

I agree with the other posting, there is a lot of work to be done before hand. You first need to establish your VISA status depending you can apply for TN or H1B1 depending on your potentional employer, you will require help from them in both cases, be aware they only allow you enter the country with a non permanent intention of staying after your work assignment is completed. Visa holders can also be refused entry anytime you return to the US. You will require a permanent CND address and while you can bring a business into the US (L visa) you must satisfy those conditions. TN's are faster but tricker you need to apply outside the US and can be accepted or refused immediatley.
Best have a lawyer draft the letter, H1B1 is generated by your employer but in either case must both must be issued before starting work. You will need a residence for S.S.N. and you can apply at the local S.S.N. site. Best get a job offer first nad have the employer assist you with the hurdles. Good luck and maybe see you soon.
