partners under 2yrs

my boyfriend (welsh)and i (canadian) have been together for just under two years and have lived together for 1yr3mths. he is from wales and is moving back as per his contract has finished here in canada. we do plan on getting married in the future but not right now. he leaves in the next few weeks and i plan to join him mid october. we are aware that i cant work whilst being there and he will be supporting me. do i go on a 6mth visitor visa knowing that later we will get married, or do i apply for the long term visa?? as well i completed my licensced practical nursing course in australia in 2002 however; am not registered can i still apply to work as a lpn in the uk??
