You will not be able to apply for a new passport until yours is within 12 months of expiration. I recently applied for my new passport and got it within 10 days!

I have had crossover on the passport expiry and TN validity before and just had to travel with both the old passport (showing the TN status) and new passport (for my entry document) and had no problems.

Renewed mine through mail for 3 years the past June
My CAN PP expires 2010. So my TN is way beyond my PP expiration date.
So....don't think why that will make a problem.

Bear in mind this situation will ease in the future because passports issued towards the end of 2011 will be valid for ten years, not five.

I got my TN yesterday at Pearson. Good news - it only took 15 minutes. Bad news - My TN expires when my current passport expires in 1 year and dozen days or so. I see the rule is not applied uniformly.

Remember, to FLY to the USA the rules are different, they base everything off the expiration date. I think this will be cleared up in the near future. My Chief states that we will continue to give TN's for the full 1-3 years regardless.

Where is this rule because it's the first I've heard of it? My understanding is that (a) your passport must be valid for at least six months at the time of entry (and this has no bearing on how long your status can be issued for) and (b) you must have a current passport (i.e. you have to renew it in the US if necessary) at all times as per the Patriot Act.

The requirement for passport to be valid for a certain period applies to the issuance of certain visas, for which Cdns, of course, are exempt.

And there is no requirement to maintain a passport current. It is a travel document. No travel, no need.

The only reference to passports in the Patriot Act is in reference to the need that they should be machine-readable.

Maybe it was in the bill, I'm sure I read that somewhere. Anyway, there was a guy on here who was arrested in Texas for not having his passport on him and he was put in jail until he could produce it, iirc!

I found this a fascinating bit of information as well.

Which also has inaccuracies in it.
